Distance Learning

7 Healthy Habits Every Distance Learning Student Should Make Time For

We all know that distance learning is a great way to broaden your knowledge and skills without having to worry about the costs — or safety aspects — of travelling to campus. Distance learning also eliminates the need to dash from one side of campus to the other — while carrying a heavy bag full of books — to make it in time for your next class.

That being said, as a distance learning student, you might just get a little bit too comfortable at home. So have a look at the list below to see how you can keep your mind sharp and your body active while you study from home:

Get enough sleep

1. Make sure that you get enough sleep

Sleep is an essential part of your daily routine. Make sure that you get the recommended 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Trying to survive off 5 hours of sleep each night is not healthy — and sufficient sleep plays an important role in allowing your brain to assimilate the knowledge that you acquired during the day.

2. Break your study material up into small, manageable sections

Breaking your study material up into smaller sections is more effective than studying all night long. You will find that if you study for shorter periods, and take regular breaks, you will be able to concentrate better on your work, and remember more of what you study.

3. Eat well

When you eat healthy food, you nourish your body — including your brain cells. Make small, healthy snacks that you can nibble on throughout the day, instead of overdoing it with the portion sizes at mealtimes. This will curb your hunger, keep your blood sugar stable, and keep your mind active for longer.

Remember that you don’t have to cut out all the foods that you love — as long as you don’t overdo it with the portion sizes. For example, there’s no harm in occasionally eating a few blocks of chocolate.

Take vitamins

4. Take a daily vitamin

Stock up on a multivitamin recommended by your doctor or pharmacist. It is a quick and easy addition to your lifestyle, and will help to keep your mind sharp and your immune system strong.

Drink water

5. Stay hydrated

Make sure you drink enough water, as this will keep your energy levels up. Not only is it healthy and inexpensive, but drinking water is also a great health booster. Drink a glass of water every day before breakfast, and keep a water bottle nearby throughout the day.

Exercise

6. Stretch and take a walk

It is good to stretch your muscles, especially if you are sitting for long periods. All the sitting and concentrating can be detrimental to your health — your body needs a break. Stretching or taking a walk will help strengthen your muscles, reduce stress, relieve tension, and help you refocus on your work.

Have fun

7. Have fun

Maintaining a balanced lifestyle is a good way to keep your mind and body healthy. Instead of spending all your time on your tasks, take some time off to do something fun and enjoyable.
