Studying a motor mechanic course can help to prepare you for a career as a petrol or diesel mechanic. When you study an N1 – N3 mechanical engineering course specialising in motor mechanics, you will learn about things like:
- Mathematics
- Engineering science
- Engineering drawings
- How to service and repair petrol/diesel motor vehicles
Is studying a motor mechanic course the right choice for me?
Motor mechanics is a rewarding field to work in, but that doesn’t mean that it’s the ideal choice for everyone. Here are a few questions to help you figure out whether studying motor mechanics might be the right choice for you:
- Are you good with your hands?
- Are you passionate about cars, bikes, and/or trucks?
- Do you have strong interpersonal skills?
- Are you able to solve problems quickly?
- Do you work well with others?
- Do you have strong practical abilities?
- Are you good at following written and spoken instructions?
- Are you prepared to do physically demanding work?
If you have answered ‘yes’ to most of these questions, then a career in motor mechanics might a good choice for you. (If you are still a bit uncertain, you can also consider other mechanical engineering courses.)
Where can I study?
You can study at Oxbridge Academy, a private distance learning college based in South Africa. When you study via distance learning, you have the option of completing your engineering course in your own time (and at your own pace) from home.

Why choose to study your motor mechanics course via distance learning?
While motor mechanics is a physical, hands-on field, it also requires you to be creative, analytical, and efficient at solving problems. By studying your course independently via distance learning, you can develop your creativity, analytical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and other valuable workplace skills (such as time management) while at the same time having the opportunity to work while you study.
And while you will be responsible for drawing up your own study schedule — and motivating yourself to stick to it — you will still have access to an industry-expert tutor to answer any questions you might have about your coursework.
You will also be able to enter into an apprenticeship while you study. This will give you the opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge in practice, even before you have completed your theoretical training.
