Occupational Certificate: Paralegal

Information

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a paralegal. A paralegal practitioner consults, refers, advises and communicates with clients within the paralegal context and performs administrative services for communities within the legal framework.

Ultimately, upon successful completion of this qualification, students will possess the following capabilities:

  • Execute administrative functions within the paralegal context.
  • Conduct basic research on precedents, cases, acts and related matters.
  • Facilitate understanding between clients or on behalf of the client.
  • Consult on behalf of the client with external stakeholders.
  • Analyse and write documents within the paralegal scope.

10 Knowledge Modules (155 Credits)

  • Fundamentals of Law
  • Basic theory on Wills and Estates
  • Introduction to Labour Law
  • Basic theory on dispute resolutions
  • Legal writing
  • Basic Criminal Law and procedure
  • Basic Civil Law and procedure
  • Fundamentals of Customer Law, Common Law and Family Law
  • Law of evidence
  • Introduction to property law and conveyancing

6 Practical Modules (80 Credits)

  • Execute administrative functions within the paralegal context
  • Conduct basic research on precedents, cases, Acts and related matters
  • Consult with the client
  • Conduct basic mediation
  • Conduct consultation with stakeholders
  • Process documents in a paralegal context

6 Workplace Modules (85 Credits):

  • Administrative functions
  • Identifying, analysing and completing legal document
  • Application of basic research techniques within the paralegal context
  • Client consultations
  • Mediation within the paralegal context
  • Consultations with clients and stakeholders
Assessment and award:

Students are required to complete the following:

  • 2 x Formative Assessments per knowledge module
  • 1 x Summative assessment per knowledge module
  • 1 x Practical assessment per practical module
  • 1 x Workplace assessment per workplace module
  • 1 x Integrated external summative assessment

You will receive an Occupational Certificate: Paralegal from the QCTO after completion of the External Integrated Summative Assessment.

Articulation options:

Horizontal Articulation

  • Higher Certificate in Paralegal Studies, NQF Level 5.

Vertical Articulation

  • Diploma in Paralegal Studies, NQF Level 6
