What Does A Business Manager Do?

A business manager is responsible for overseeing and managing an organisation’s daily, monthly, and yearly activities, as well as for managing the people who are employed in the organisation. A career in business management, therefore, involves a wide variety of tasks, activities, and job options.

What Types Of Jobs Are Available In Business Management?

Business management is a broad field covering many different roles and responsibilities, and studying business management prepares you for a wide variety of careers in this field. The careers you will be able to pursue will depend on factors such as:

  • Your qualifications
  • Your training or specialisation in a particular area of business
  • Your level of financial skills
  • Your leadership abilities

These are only a few examples. There are many other aspects to take into account when you make a decision regarding your career in business management. Your own set of skills, interests, and practical experience will also play an important role in determining the types of positions that you will be able to fill.

BUSINESS ANALYST

Business analysts identify problems, weaknesses, and opportunities within an organisation, and find ways to solve those problems and capitalise on those opportunities. A background or qualification in business management will give you many of the skills that you need to start out your career as a business analyst. Additional qualifications may, however, be required.

OPERATIONS MANAGER

As an operations manager, your duties would generally include monitoring and analysing the systems being used by an organisation to check their efficiency and effectiveness, and to work out strategies for improving them if necessary. A qualification in business management will be to your advantage if you want to look for work in this direction.

GENERAL MANAGER

As a general manager, you would be responsible for managing staff, as well as for establishing and accomplishing business objectives. A qualification in business management will put you on the right track to becoming a general manager.

MARKETING MANAGER

As a marketing manager, you would be responsible for managing the marketing, advertising, and promotional activities and staff within an organisation. A business management qualification will equip you with the background knowledge and general skills that you need to be successful in marketing management, but an additional qualification in marketing may be required.

COMPLIANCE OFFICER

As a compliance officer, you would be responsible for promoting ethical conduct and for ensuring compliance with the rules, regulations, and standard processes that govern how organisations should conduct business. A qualification in business management will give you relevant background knowledge, and will help you to understand how organisations work.

MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT

As a management consultant, your main role would be to help organisations solve issues, maximise growth, and improve overall business performance. In most instances, you will be required to have a relevant undergraduate degree, but by studying a business management course, you can obtain valuable knowledge and skills that will help you to get started in this direction.

OFFICE MANAGER

An office manager’s duties vary according to the size of the business. However, responsibilities typically include organising meetings, booking accommodation, typing documents, preparing letters and emails, compiling monthly reports, dealing with complaints, and supervising junior office staff. While a qualification in business management is not necessarily required for this role, it will give you an advantage over other candidates, and will equip you with the knowledge and skills that you need to perform the work effectively.

PUBLIC RELATIONS MANAGER

As a public relations manager, you would be responsible for managing the reputation of an organisation. Your daily tasks would include planning and implementing PR strategies; liaising with colleagues, clients, and the media; attending events; writing press releases; and compiling reports. While a business management qualification is not usually required for this role, it will give you the business insight that you need to perform your PR functions more effectively.

Keep in mind that, in addition to studying business management, you may need to study toward additional qualifications, or write additional exams, before you will be considered for many of these positions. Also remember that experience is an important factor that employers will look at when hiring managers and other senior staff.

What About International Business Management Jobs?

International business management jobs are highly sought-after, and may involve working abroad on either a permanent or a temporary basis. To qualify for an international business management job, you will need to meet certain criteria, which will generally include the following:

  • A relevant qualification that is recognised in the country in which you plan to work
  • Relevant practical work experience
  • A valid passport
  • A visa and/or residence permit for the country in which you plan to work
  • A work permit for the country in which you plan to work

Aside from these general criteria, you will also need to meet the specific criteria set out for the job that you’re applying for.

Note: If you want to study towards a qualification that will enable you to work in a specific country, it is your responsibility to find out which qualifications will be recognised in that country.

When Can I Become A Business Manager?

There are no fixed requirements for becoming a business manager, so theoretically speaking, you could become a business manager at any point in your career. Practically-speaking, however, employers look for certain characteristics when they appoint people in business management roles, including:

  • Relevant qualifications or training
  • Relevant experience (for a senior position, prior experience in a managerial position will usually be required)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Time management skills
  • Problem-solving skills

Completing a business management course would therefore be the best place to start when it comes to working towards your dream managerial job. Your studies will equip you with plenty of the skills and knowledge that you need to become a junior manager.
