“Chase your dreams, stretch yourself beyond reach, take action and overcome your fears.”

These are the words of 22 year-old Tsholofelo Melaketso, an Oxbridge Academy student who, despite coming from difficult circumstances, is achieving her goals, one step at a time. Here is her inspirational story:

Humble beginnings

Living in the informal settlement of Galeshewe near Kimberley, Tsholofelo was raised by a single mother. “My mother was unemployed, so she had a difficult job raising me and paying for my school fees,” says Tsholofelo. However, through hard work and dedication, Tsholofelo managed to get her matric certificate and immediately looked for ways to further her education and find work.

Chasing dreams

Tsholofelo completed her N4 – N6 Financial Management studies at a TVET college in Kimberley, and continued searching for opportunities to improve herself.

“I managed to find an internship at a protection and security services company, and I used the money I made from that to enrol for studies with Oxbridge Academy. If you want to achieve things in life, then you have to make sacrifices and spend your money on things that will improve you,” she remarks.

Tsholofelo enrolled for two short courses – Cost and Management Accounting and Payroll and Monthly SARS – passing both of them with flying colours.

After completing her studies in 2017, she was appointed full-time as an accounting clerk with the South African Police Service (SAPS), where she has been employed for nine months.

“The courses I completed prepared me for this job and I am enjoying what I’m doing. However, that doesn’t mean I am going to stop improving myself,” says Tsholofelo, who is now studying the Principles of Management Skills Certificate, balancing her job with her studies.

“My dream is to become an auditor and maybe to open my own business. I know that I will get there one day.”

The desire to succeed

Tsholofelo says that her self-discipline, eagerness and hard-working attitude has led to her success. “To be successful you have to use each and every day as an opportunity to improve, to become a bit better, and to get a little bit closer to your goals. It might sound like a lot of work and even near impossible if you have a busy schedule, but the best part is that the more you accomplish, the more you will want to do and the higher you will want to reach. As long as you have the hunger for success, you will always have the power within you to achieve it!”

Tshlofelo offers the following advice to young people who want to achieve their dreams:

“The will to win, the desire to succeed, and the urge to reach your full potential… These are the keys that will unlock the door to personal achievement”.
