If you don’t have a Matric certificate, then don’t despair! Your level of education does not have to hold you back from achieving what you want to in life. Often, it is your own dedication, and the small steps that you take towards reaching your goals that will set you up for a successful future.
If you don’t have a Matric, finding a decent job in South Africa can seem like an impossible task. There’s no denying it, for many jobs, the first thing an employer will list in the requirements is a Matric certificate. But this doesn’t mean that you should give up.

There are courses you can take without a Matric certificate
Let’s say you’re interested in studying something. Because you don’t have a Matric certificate, you won’t be able to get immediate entry into studying a higher qualification, such as a National Certificate. In this case, you can explore skills certificates and other short learning programmes.
If, for example, you’re interested in Public Sector Management, then you could decide to study a skills certificate in municipal management or public management. These courses will give you a good foundational knowledge of the field. And if you want to continue expanding your skills and knowledge, then you can take additional short courses. This will build on your skills and boost your CV!
You can still qualify for National Certificates without a Matric
Although we’ve just said in that you can’t get IMMEDIATE entry into a National Certificate without a Matric, there is in fact a path you can take to allow you to study these qualifications.
Well, the answer lies in an introductory certificate. Otherwise known as a National Introductory Certificate, this certificate only requires Grade 11 as an entry requirement. The study material includes two compulsory subjects, and then you need to choose another field with two additional subjects.
To make that easier to understand, let’s say that you want to study an N4 National Certificate in Tourism, but don’t have a Matric. You will first need to study the introductory certificate, which includes Entrepreneurship and Communication as the compulsory subjects. Then, you choose Tourism as your field, which will include Personnel Management and Computer Practice as subjects.
Once you’ve completed the 12 month introductory certificate, you will be able to apply for your N4 National Certificate. And there you have it, you’ve managed to study what you wanted to, without a Matric certificate!
Employers value skills and experience
It’s important to remember that when you’re applying for jobs, employers are increasingly looking for proof of experience and skills. If you’re interested in business management, for example, then an employer will be far more impressed that you’ve played a role in running a successful small business than the fact that you have a Matric certificate but don’t have any experience.
If you’re passionate about something, then you will put your heart and soul into getting where you want to go. You’ll use the internet to do all the research you can. You’ll make connections with experts who can give you advice and mentorship. Or get involved in community leadership. Or volunteer your time at a company to learn crucial on-the-job skills. The point is, that with plenty of hard work, passion, and some sacrifices, there are a number of ways to build up the experience and knowledge that will make your CV attractive to employers.
And also remember, there is a way to still get your Matric certificate!
While this blog article has hopefully shown you that your level of education may not matter as much as you think, it’s understandable to still want a Matric certificate behind your name. The good news is that you do have a second chance! You are able to rewrite subjects that you failed, or, if you’re older, you can study an Amended Senior Certificate.
Remember that the path to success is not a one-way track! There are multiple paths you can take which can lead you to your ultimate destination.
