Oxbridge Academy prides itself on being the vehicle to success for its students. We have over 25 years of experience helping thousands of students succeed in achieving their education goals. And this blog is dedicated to one of them. Meet Tessa Joao, an Oxbridge Academy graduate living her dream of working in the mining industry.

Tessa was born in a Namibian town called Rundu. She says the Namibian government sent her parents to live and work permanently in South Africa in 1979. They moved to the Northwest province, where she grew up in Mafikeng. Her dad has experience as a distance-learning student, and he was the one who told her about Oxbridge Academy. She remembers how she always dreamed about becoming a geologist: “As a child, I loved playing with rocks and sand. That’s where I found my passion for health and safety. I wanted to be a rock scientist but ended up being a health and safety officer.”

She enrolled at Oxbridge Academy in 2018 and graduated in 2019 with a certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). Practitioners in this line of work play a key role in designing health and safety measures that will drastically reduce the risk of injury and diseases in the workplace. They do this by identifying potential dangers in the workplace. Occupational Health and Safety workers can work in different environments that range from offices to factories and mines. There will always be a need for health and safety professionals as long as there are workers. Tessa now works for Anglo American Mines in Kathu in the Northern Cape. And when asked if she has any words of wisdom for our current students, she said:
“My advice to my fellow students will be to focus on what they are passionate about. To do their research, read your books. I mean the whole book before you start writing your assignment. You must understand the content of what you are about to write. That’s what I always did. I read the book for about three days; then I start answering questions.”
Our Occupational Health and Safety courses will teach you the skills you need to work in or oversee the OHS division of any organisation.
