Happiness is something that all human beings aspire to. Everybody wants to feel content and satisfied. This is why we all strive to accomplish the goals that will help us reach a state of happiness. On 12 July 2012, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 20 March the International Day of Happiness. This day aims to encourage global happiness through focusing on the importance of inclusive and balanced economic growth, while also promoting the alleviation of poverty.  All global citizens, of all ages, are invited to celebrate this day through any way in which they can help achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These goals seek to end poverty, reduce inequality, and protect our planet, which can lead to well-being and happiness.

Where does the International Day of Happiness come from?

The International Day of Happiness is inspired by Bhutan – a place where people live according to a system called the Gross National Happiness (GNH) index. This alternative measure takes on a more holistic outlook, where spiritual well-being is as much of a priority as economic and material wealth. The citizens of this Himalayan Kingdom are considered to be some of the happiest people in the world.

The happiness of any society begins with the well-being of the families that live in it.” – Kofi Annan.

How to get involved with the International Day of Happiness

This year, the Smurfs will form part of the celebrations around the International Day of Happiness to help spread happiness by showing their support and promoting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Smurfs feel strongly about this because in Smurf Village, they can only be happy if everyone has enough to eat and if no one is worrying about anything.

How can you create a happy environment for yourself and others?

There are a variety of ways in which you can create a happy environment for yourself and those around you. A good place to start is by showing kindness towards others and giving back to your community. There are many places in need of help where you can donate clothes, books, food, toys, and money. This will not only make those that you are helping happy, but it will also be rewarding for you.

Start spending more time making connections with the people around you. This could be through meeting new people, reconnecting with old friends, or even spending more time with family. Building close relationships provides love and support systems, and improves self-worth. These are all important for living a happy life.

Keep yourself and those around you happy and stress-free with these 7 unusual ways to relieve stress.

Nature

Be aware of your surroundings, the environment, and nature. Take pride in it and play your part in taking care of it. This is one of the important ways in which you can help to preserve nature and the animals that live in it for a better and happier future for generations to come.

A day such as the International Day of Happiness is one not to be missed. Spreading happiness doesn’t have to cost you a thing. Your time, your care, and the little that you no longer need are all worth a lot to those in need. Every deed, no matter how small, makes a difference. Go out there on 20 March and connect with people, and build societies that will ensure we can work together to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
