What job opportunities are available?

You will find that most marketing teams have a broad variety of functions. In addition to a manager who oversees the department, positions could include:

    • Pay-per-click (PPC) specialist: When you manage a PPC portfolio, you are responsible for setting up online advertising campaigns, in accordance with a set budget. You will target certain keywords, depending on what you’re advertising, in order to display ads in search engine results. The budget will be used to determine the frequency of ad placements. Pay-per-click literally means that for each click on an ad that the business will pay the search engine a small fee, so the PPC specialist needs to monitor the effectiveness of such campaigns by closely analysing statistics.

    • Web developer: No matter how big or small a company is, having a good website is a crucial part of an effective marketing strategy. Working closely with other members of the marketing team, web developers will ensure that the company’s website is visually attractive and easy for visitors to navigate. A web developer therefore needs the technical skills to make changes to the back-end of a website, but must also have a sense of style and understand basic user experience.

    • Graphic designer: Graphic designers are responsible for creating eye-catching and interesting visuals. These visuals may be used for the website, online adverts and other mediums such as billboards, brochures or posters. In some cases, graphic designers are also responsible for a company’s branding and will be required to ensure that visual elements across the business adhere to certain guidelines.

    • Content writer: Content writers (also called copywriters) may be responsible for writing copy for websites, advertisements or email campaigns. If the company has a blog, then they may also be tasked with writing interesting, relevant content for this channel.

    • Social media manager: Social media has become an essential and highly effective marketing tool. The social media manager will manage social media accounts to ensure that posts are interesting and can attract followers. They may also have a budget to boost posts to attract more “likes” or new followers.

    • Marketing co-ordinator: This role fulfills a variety of functions that could include handling the arrangements for marketing campaigns and events, assisting with market research, developing content, and providing assistance to other members of the team. Marketing co-ordinators therefore have a broader spectrum of functions and don’t necessarily focus on one specific marketing element.

  • Photographer and videographer: Individuals appointed in these positions are responsible for taking photographs or videos for use in the team’s various campaigns.

Some marketing departments won’t have all of these positions. In smaller teams, employees will often wear more than one hat, taking on several of the above functions.

How do you get a job in digital marketing?

With the range of different skills and positions in the field, there are various paths into a digital marketing career.

A marketing qualification isn’t always necessary

For people like writers, graphic designers, photographers and web developers, a specific marketing qualification isn’t absolutely necessary for finding a job in the field. If you have the necessary skills and are eager to learn, then you should be able to adapt to a position in marketing fairly quickly.

Marketing-specific qualifications

If marketing itself is your main interest, then you can lay the foundations for a career in the field by studying a qualification that deals specifically with marketing. These marketing qualifications will help you to develop a broad knowledge of the various aspects that make up the marketing environment – including digital marketing. This is a particularly useful option if you’re interested in becoming a marketing co-ordinator, or if you aim to be a marketing manager one day.

You can also combine this qualification with your existing skills (such as those listed in the previous point) if you want to improve your chances of finding a job in a marketing team.

Building experience

As with most fields, having some experience will help your CV to stand out from the crowd. If you’re studying part-time, you could look for a half-day job as an assistant in a marketing team. You could also volunteer your time or ask whether you could shadow so that you can learn more about the field. All of this will improve your knowledge and help you gain some experience.

The digital marketing field offers plenty of opportunities for a fruitful and rewarding career. Best of all, it allows people with a number of different passions to come together as a team.
