What are the advantages of obtaining a National Certificate?

If you’re looking for a job in hospitality, then a National Certificate will give you a distinct advantage over candidates who don’t have a formal qualification in the field. Because these courses are developed to meet the Department of Higher Education and Training’s requirements, and are both registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and listed on the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) database, they are held in high regard by employers.

An N4 Certificate will give you a solid foundation for applying for entry-level jobs in the industry. If you want to take your career to the next level, you could potentially work part-time while completing your N5 Certificate, and then your N6 after that. With the right combination of experience and the broad range of theoretical and practical knowledge you’ll gain through your studies, you should be able to make good progress up the career ladder! Remember that you can also gain a National Diploma if you can provide proof of 18 months’ work experience after completing your N6 Certificate.

What job opportunities are there for you?

These National Certificates will prepare you for work in a wide variety of jobs within the sector. The hospitality and catering sector is vast, with jobs available in restaurants, hotels, spas, coffee shops, airliners, cruise ships, catering companies and many more places around the world.

Here are just a handful of the careers you could potentially aim for:

  • Catering Assistant
  • Restaurant Manager
  • Food Service Assistant
  • Hotel Receptionist
  • Hotel Porter
  • Hotel Manager
  • Spa Receptionist
  • Reservations Manager
  • Events Supervisor

Your knowledge and qualifications will also equip you well for starting your own catering company or venturing into other hospitality-related businesses such as guest house management.

The hospitality and catering industry is an exciting and varied field. With a National Certificate behind your name, a world of options is open to you!
