Our final winner of the 2019 Oxbridge Academy Medal for Succeeding Against the Odds is Veronica Mosotho, a domestic worker and mother of three who is studying towards a brighter future.

Veronica, from Bronkhorstspruit in Mpumalanga, was raised by unemployed parents.

“My parents could not afford to pay for tertiary education after school, so I didn’t really have a choice but to become a domestic worker,” says Veronica.

Veronica works from 8AM to 4PM every day. When she gets home, she still has to put food on the table for her children, and she somehow also manages to fit in time for her studies. She is currently studying an N4 Educare National Certificate with Oxbridge Academy.

“It is very difficult to study and do assignments after a long day of hard work, but I told myself that with hard work and dedication, nothing is impossible. I make sure I make time for studying and doing my assignments every day after work until late at night. Sometimes I even wake up at dawn if there is a lot of work to do,” says Veronica.

Veronica says that she is determined to change people’s perceptions of her.

“Some people think that being a domestic worker means you are not capable or smart enough to study further. This is a wrong perception, everyone has a story to tell. I have proven that being a domestic worker does not mean the end of the world – one must not forget about their dreams.”

Between her work and caring for her family, Veronica has managed to achieve distinctions for her studies so far.

“I am very proud of myself because through it all, I have been able to obtain distinctions. It has not been an easy journey as it is difficult to get leave to do practical work and write exams, but I have made it and am still going forward! PHAMBILI!”

Congratulations Veronica, you are rising above your circumstances and reaching for the stars!
