Being a successful manager is completely different from succeeding in any other type of job. You might have all the necessary skills and expertise to perform your current job successfully, and you might therefore think that you are qualified to apply for the next managerial vacancy in your field.
But do you have what it takes to be a financial manager?
- Do you have the necessary leadership skills?
- Do you have the right financial knowledge?
- Do you have the personality to manage and motivate a team?
- Do you have sufficient experience in the financial industry?
If your goal is to
become a financial manager one day, you need to start preparing now. Here are a few tips on what you can do:
1 – Gain experience:
Experience is vital in this field. You cannot expect to land a managerial job in finance straight out of college or university. You first need to gain enough relevant experience. A good place to start would be to look for an internship or junior position at a bank or an accounting firm, or in the finance department of a large company. This type of experience will count in your favour when you want to advance your career in the field of financial management.
2 – Prioritise:
As a financial manager, you need to be able to oversee numerous projects and activities at the same time. Time management and prioritisation skills are therefore essential. You can work on these skills in your current job, or even while you are busy studying.
3 – Get qualified:
If you want to work as a financial manager, you need to be suitably qualified. Even though some financial management jobs don’t require a degree, it is still important to make sure that you are in possession of a recognised qualification that is relevant to the type of work that you want to do.

If you want to work as a financial manager in the public sector, you can also choose to study toward a specialised qualification, such as a
National Certificate in Public Management (Accounting).
4 – Update your skills on a regular basis:
Whether you choose to update your leadership skills, improve your financial expertise, or work on your time management, it is essential that you make an effort to stand out from your competitors and to stay up to date with new developments in your industry.
Financial management is a competitive field, and if you want to be successful, you need to make sure that you are properly prepared for the challenges that you are likely to face.
